SummaryArthur Dagley was born in Hastings on the 21st of June, 1919. As a toddler he moved to Tauranga, where his parents opened a large drapery. As a young man Arthur worked in the drapery, but also studied art under other well known artists including Claudia Jarman, Paul Olds, Louise Henderson, Rudi Gopas, Garth Tapper and Colin McCahon.
Arthur's artistic style was generally more abstract, and he often incorporated mixed media into his work. He produced many landscapes, seascapes, portraits and figures, but he was especially interested in the Tauranga port and shipping.
Arthur first exhibited his art in Elizabeth Street in 1966. He continued to spend at least three decades of his life as a professional artist. Though he operated his own private gallery, he always hoped for Tauranga to open a public gallery.
In 1968 he was a finalist for the Benson & Hedges Art Award, and a recipient of the National Bank Art Award in 1973.
