SummaryThe Battle of Gate Pa by Jaxon from Tauranga Intermediate School was part of an entry by Room 31 into the 150th Battle of Gate Pā Poetry Poster Competition (2014). Main BodyIn 1864 began the battle of Gate Pa, Where soldiers came from both near and far.
It could hardly have been called an equal fight, Although the 230 Māori brought all their might.
In Tauranga at the top of a hill the Māori did wait, For the 1700 British soldiers who carried their fate.
The British opened fire onto the Māori with no remorse. Leaving many dead and hundred wounded - but those who were okay fought back of course.
Even though the British were not weak, The Māori had a better technique.
After the Māori had won this war, It was time to battle no more.
