SummaryIntroducing Tauranga Writers Tauranga Writers is New Zealand's longest-running self-help group for writers, established in 1967. We meet monthly on the first Thursday at 7 pm and our present venue is the Alzheimer's Tauranga Rooms, 116 13th Avenue, Tauranga.

Most meetings concentrate on 'work in progress' with constructive feedback between us. We also exchange information about writing in general, and our own and Tauranga Writers' ongoing projects. To date, Tauranga Writers has produced a CD, Where Poets Gather: Ten Poets From the Bay of Plenty (reading their own work); a jubilee anthology This Side of the World: Tauranga Writers Celebrating 40 Years, a collection of member's work across four decades; Narratives with Nosh: Stories, Recipes and Poems (2009), edited by Margaret Beverland, and, in 2010, Double Vision: a Collusion Between the Verbal and the Visual – 12 writers and 12 artists from the Bay of Plenty. Tauranga Writers works closely with New Zealand Society of Authors (Bay of Plenty) whose meetings, held on the 3^rd Monday of the month in the same building, are ‘Meet the Writer’ sessions open to the general public. (www.authors.org.nz) We also have good relationships with the University of Waikato in Tauranga (http://www.waikato.ac.nz/pathways/community/), with whom we have often organised masterclasses with established writers, and other literary events. Many of our members are also indie authors as shareholders with Oceanbooks Limited (www.oceanbooks.co.nz), a publishing co-operative based in the Bay and run by writers for writers.

Tauranga Writers contribute a weekly column, 'The Write Space', published weekly by Sun Live Media (http://www.sunlive.co.nz/blogs/), and contributes a monthly column to Creative Tauranga’s Creative Beat magazine on ‘Literary Trailblazers.’ (http://www.creativetauranga.org.nz/editorial/creative-beat.html.) Our monthly newsletter, Update, is packed full of information about creative writing in the Bay and beyond, including markets, awards, competitions, etc. Attending members get this free on payment of their $30 annual subscription, or as non-attending 'postal members' (our ‘Friends’) for only $10 a year..

Tauranga Writers is also working hard to promote the cause of young writers. They have set up a website (http://youngnzwriters.weebly.com/) especially for them and will run an annual short story competition for secondary school students.
