Assailants in the Battle at Pukehinahina, 1864
SummaryCompiled from a variety of newspapers, databases and books. Tauranga Library's Heritage and Research staff appreciate the work of Jenni Palmer, Christine Clements, Wendy Napier-Walker and Debbie McCauley that have helped make this possible. Main Body
Toward the conclusion of the New Zealand Wars, a sentiment began to emerge among ordinary settlers and soldiers - a realization that their aspirations for a better life had been co-opted to serve the interests of influential land speculators by the mechanism of war.
"They had no wish to be shot down, riddled, or hacked and hewn to pieces — for what? For the glory of Old England? For the protection of their altars and hearths, their wives and families? For vengeance? For justice and mercy? No, for none of these things, but just to clear off some poor fellows from their own native land, and obtain the title clear of encumbrances for the speculators at Auckland."
