The gardens to the left were begun in 1936 under the care of Charles Cameron, the Borough Gardener. The registration plate on the automobile are of the kind issued between 1935 and 1936. The photograph then is late 1930s at the earliest, but more likely 1940s or 50s. The original small black and white print was published as "The Strand, Tauranga,. N. Z. 4975".
