The Matapihi railbridge just visible was opened in 1924. Herries Arch (1929) is just visible. The gardens under construction were begun in 1936 under the care of Charles Cameron (1879-1972), the Borough Gardener. To the right of frame, on the Corner of The Strand and Harington Street, is the newly built Art Deco Tauranga Hotel (1937). The photograph then is likely 1937 given how young the gardens look and the presence of the Tauranga Hotel.
