Ledger of Dr Frederick William Armitage

Datec. 1882-c.1935Reference NumberAms 292DescriptionThis ledger, used originally by Dr Frederick William Armitage, dates back to 1882 and was used by him until his untimely death in 1884. It records names of Tauranga patients he attended and their resulting prescriptions. After his death it appears to have been used for household and farming accounts by another person until 1935.

Dr Armitage was born in 1843 in Louth, Lincolnshire, United Kingdom and came to New Zealand in 1869. He married Henrietta Wily in 1870 and died at the early age of 41. On arrival here he joined the Constabulary Force, receiving his appointment as Surgeon to the forces under Colonel (afterwards Sir George) Whitmore. At the hands of Sir Donald McLean, he received the appointment of Health Officer for the Tauranga District, which appointment he held, and continued to fulfil his duties, until prevented to by his terminal illness. Dr Armitage was surgeon to the local Benefit Societies. He took a great interest in all intellectual matters, and was an active supporter of the Institute. As a local practitioner he was widely known and universally respected. He had been ailing for a considerable time, but had much improved in health by 1884 so his sudden death caused quite a shock in the community.
