Banks Avenue runs from Marine Parade in Mount Maunganui down to to the round about on Maunganui Road, where it then continues as Salisbury Avenue down the Salisbury Wharf. View it on Google Maps here.
Several of the street names at Mount Maunganui commemorate chairmen of the Town Board and early mayors. Bain Street is named for David P. Bain, who in 1930 was appointed the first chairman. He was replaced in 1933 by E.C. Banks, whose name is recalled in Banks Avenue.
E.C Banks was Mr Edward Cedric Banks (1907-1988) who, according to an obituary located at Tauranga City Libraries:
…with a horse and dray formed some of the first roads in downtown Mount Maunganui…
