Mr. Cross was born in England and later moved to New Zealand in 1913 with his father who settled in Tauranga. Mr. Cross started working at the Bay of Plenty Times in 1919 as an accountant. The paper had a small circulation and staff of 800 and 12 respectively. The paper gradually grew, and in 1944, they bought their first reel-fed press that enabled them to print six pages instead of four. The town's growth and the expected development of the port contributed to the paper's success. Mr. Cross also talked about the difficulties the paper faced during the depression years and how they managed to stay afloat. The business suffered two major fires.
