SummaryJohn Lees Faulkner was an early Tauranga trader and boat-builder, who arrived in the area in c. 1840.
John was born in England sometime between 1807 and 1812. The uncertainty of birth date is due to inconsistencies between primary sources.
Boat carpentry brought John out to the Bay of Islands, New Zealand, during the 1830s. A few years later John moved to Tauranga, eventually settling near Ōtūmoetai Pā, where he established a trading post and commenced boat-building. In 1860 he was appointed as Tauranga's first postmaster.
John was married twice: first to Ruawahine Irihapeti with whom he had 13 children; secondly to Elizabeth Humphreys, with whom he had one child, John Daniel. John Daniel later founded Faulkner's Ferries.
John Lees Faulkner passed away on the 8th of September 1882, at his son John Daniel's home on Cameron Road (The Yorkshire Grey Hotel, on the corner of Cameron Road and Sixth Avenue).
