As a class, students and children at both secondary and primary schools had the opportunity to research the background, actions, and consequences of the Battle of Gate Pā and write poems using their English and Māori language skills. These poems were then displayed in a decorative poster and entered into the competition.

Main Body

Only one entry per class was allowed. The last date for entries was Thursday 1 April 2014. Students wrote poems. Each child in the class wrote a poem in Māori or English or both on an A4 size sheet of paper based on the title: What does the Battle of Gate Pā mean to me? Children who entered this competition wrote about any aspect of the Battle of Gate Pā. A large poster was created. The children then pasted their poems (only the best ones might have been chosen) onto a larger piece of paper (or any other material) and drew a large picture showing a scene of the Battle of Gate Pā as a background to the poems. The poems and the drawing complemented each other. The posters were displayed in the St. George's Church Hall alongside the Battles of Gate Pā/Te Ranga Art Competition entries or at the Tauranga City Library during the sesquicentennial (150 years) commemorations of the battle.
