SummaryAlso known as: The Norris Family Residence.
Constructed circa 1874 by early Tauranga builder Mr. Conway, Barbreck House was commissioned by Captain Ebenezer Goddard Norris. Named after the estate in Scotland belonging to Norris' father-in-law. It was located on a large section at the corner of Devonport Road and Second Avenue, extending through to Cameron Road. Modelled after an English vicarage and crafted from durable heart kauri, the home featured high-quality materials and craftsmanship. The design reflected a refined Victorian lifestyle, with separate children’s quarters accessed through baize-covered doors, a fenced play area, and grounds with coachhouses and horse paddocks. The drawing room had a distinctive window that could be unbolted, opening directly to steps leading into the garden.
