Crabbe Grocery and Drapery Store, 1867- (Place)

SummaryThe Crabbe Grocery and Drapery Store, originally located on Cameron Road near Sixth Avenue in Tauranga, was founded in 1867 by George Alfred Crabbe and rebuilt in 1877 by builder John Conway. The two-story building included a front retail area, two rooms upstairs, and rear living quarters, with architectural features such as rusticated weatherboards, large front display windows, double-hung sash windows, and a hipped iron roof. Sometime between 1964 and 1972, architect Reg McPherson renovated the structure, creating a flat above and two shops below. Used by various businesses until 2002, the building was then relocated to Tauranga Boys' College's "Hillsdene" site, where it now serves as the college's uniform shop.
