SummaryBowyer was born in England 17 May 1857 and came to New Zealand in 1861 with his mother Harriet and young sister Ida May. His father Thomas had emigrated to New Zealand a year prior. Bowyer was educated in Dunedin and later went to Fiji as a young lad to stay with his uncle and aunt the Hon Mr and Mrs Brown.
Bowyer owned a large plantation in Fiji near the Bureta River on Ovalau. He married Emily Sophia Harness in 1886 in Fiji and they had three children: Eric, Oscar Bowyer and Olive Jessie. After his first wife died in 1895 he married Eileen Campbell and they returned to New Zealand to live in Tauranga, taking on a farm called "The Pines" and later "Bureta Farm" at Ōtūmoetai. He also had the lease of Mount Maunganui.
