Kiwifruit winemaking
The first kiwifruit wine brand name to be produced in New Zealand was 'Koha' in Te Puke.
The second, the Preston family's kiwifruit wine label, 'Prestons' of Belk Road, Tauriko, began in 1980 after converting a 70 hectare dairy farm. Their winemaking methods were based on those developed by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR). Their sparkling kiwifruit wine was launched in Tauranga in December 1983. They also produced a kiwifruit wine liqueur.

Kiwifruit Wine Company of New Zealand's Hayward Lodge Winery and Durham Light Kiwifruit Winery on Oropi Road, first produced a kiwifruit wine named 'Durham Light' in 1982. It was launched in Japan by Suntori Ltd in 1985. The wine was named after the Durham Light Infantry regiment from northern England, which served in Tauranga conflicts from 1864-1866. Described as a "soft, mellow flavour" The General Manager of the business, in 1982 was local orchardist, Bill Smith. The wines have won awards from the New Zealand National Fruit Wine Industry and the Monde Selection Brussels.
