SummaryNorfolk Hospital, Tauranga’s first purpose-built private hospital, was established by Dr. Harold Gilbert in 1953 on the historic Te Renga Renga Pā site, later home to Reverend T.S. Grace’s mission house. Architect Frank Gillman designed the hospital with 18 beds, central heating, and radiology and laboratory facilities, preserving several historic trees and a former mission schoolroom on-site. In 1998, Norfolk Hospital shelved planned expansions after the Tauranga District Council listed the property as a heritage site on its draft District Plan (later removed). Norfolk Hospital merged with Southern Cross Tauranga and closed after the opening of Grace Hospital in 2007.SourcesNew private hospital opened in Tauranga: y of Plenty Times, 23 Nov 1953 p2 p6-7New Private Hospital on Historic Site: Bay of Plenty Times (presumed) 14 June 1962$3 million plan for Norfolk Hospital (Purchase by Greenwood Park group): Bay of Plenty Times, 8 Nov 1986Nip & tuck for Tauranga: Bay of Plenty Times, 30 Sep 1987Medical centre gets go-ahead: Bay of Plenty Times, 23 Oct 1987Bay of Plenty Times, 30 Aug 1988 (Moved to site on Devonport Rd for use as Plunket–Karitane Family unit)Surgeons, residents buy city hospital: Bay of Plenty Times, 4 May 1989Hospitals history goes back 38 years: Bay of Plenty Times, 25 Jan 1992See New look for 1993…: Bay of Plenty Times, 6 Feb 1993 p7Hospital Assures Respect for Pa Site: Bay of Plenty Times 16 October 1998
