Dixie Dean was a New Zealand motorcycling pioneer and Second World War veteran. Born in Tauranga, he served with distinction in the New Zealand Cavalry Division. A leading motorcycle racer in the mid-20th century, he opened a motorcycle sales and repair shop on Devonport Road in the 1950s. In 1966, with his wife Margaret (née Howat), he developed the 1254-acre Maddix Park at the end of Rowe Road, establishing it as a motocross and recreational hub.
