Petitioned the Governor on September 20 1881 to go from being a Town to a Borough.
Proclaimed a Borough by the Governor on 21 February 1882.
Became a City in 17 April 1963, as Tauranga exceeded the requirements for 20,000 residents
For Tauranga's 21st Anniversary of being a city, 21 gold keys were presented to nominated residents on April 17 at Baycourt.
The Borough received some extra territory from Tauranga County when in 1989 they were transformed into Tauranga District Council and Western Bay of Plenty District Council by the Local Government (Bay of Plenty Region) Reorganisation Order 1989.
Clause 1 (2) reads "Subject to subclause (3) of this caluse, this order shall come into force on the 1st day of November 1989".
Clause 2 (1) reads "The first elections of the local authorities, and the community boards for the communities, constituted by this order shall be held on the 14th day of October 1989".
The newly-elected local authorities had to meet by the 14th day of November 1989. Certain provisions of the order came into force upon its making (9 June 1989) to allow for the elections to take place, the appointment of the new principal administrative officer and for the purposes of certain clauses of the order (mostly to enable the creation of transitional committees).
Tauranga became a City for the second time after its population exceeded 100,000 in 2003.
An Order-in-Council was made on 29 September 2003 called the Local Government (Tauranga City Council) Order 2003, as Statutory Regulation 2003/275. This was notified in the New Zealand Gazette of 2 October 2003 under the Regulation Summary. It came into force on 1 March 2004.
