Prince Charles and Princess Diana were greeted from their vehicle by The Hon K. R. Allen (then MP for Tauranga), R.F. Dillon (Mayor), M. Montacute (City Manager) and Craig Pollock (Baycourt’s first Manager).
Speeches were given from a raised stage, covered by a marquee, outside Baycourt Community and Arts Centre, with rows of chairs for the 700 invited guests. (Visit B40 to hear the speeches of Mayor Dillon and (now) King Charles III).
A commemorative plaque was unveiled in the foyer.
The royal couple then viewed a display of local arts and crafts, and a five-minute production of The Magistrate by Tauranga Repertory.
