He was single at the time, a farmer and the son of George Whyte of Taranaki. He fought at Gallipoli, was injured in May and again in August of 1915 at Chunuk Bair (gunshot wound, right foot and ankle). He won the 191415 Star, the British War Medal, the Victory Medal.
