Jean White (1935-2002) was a Tauranga District Councillor 1995 until her death in June 2002. She had been in communication with Tauranga District Council representatives and the Greerton Village Community Association who wished to recognise her contribution "to the community over many years and in various capacities."
Petra Sauter, Greerton Village Manager noted "I conveyed to them that your preference would be for a Jean White Community Notice Board, rather than a tree. (As trees come and go and are not guaranteed to be permanent)."
Greerton Village Mainstreet wrote to Jean and family on 11 June 2002 confirming that the Jean White Greerton Community Notice Board was to be installed on Chadwick Road, close to Greerton Village School where Jean, and her four sons and daughters with Maurice, were all pupils. Noting that it was "likely that the notice board will be relocated to the Village Green 2005."
The notice board was a joint project between Tauranga District Council and Greerton Village Community Association.
The noticeboards are embraced by two undulating natural rock walls decorated with mosaics complementing the Greerton colour scheme and incorporating some personal touches for the family.
On the western wall red soldier poppies to signify remembrance and Jean's courage during her last months surround the commemorative plaque. Soldier poppies have a black cross at their centre - signifying Jeans conversion to Catholicism prior to her marriage to Maurice.
The five flowers to the left of the plaque represent Maurice and Jean White's five children....
...The northern end of the eastern wall has a variety of flowers representing Jean and Maurice's grandchildren and Jean's love for gardening....
All mosaics are inlaid on a black background, indicative of Jean White's passing.
