SummaryLieutenant James Thomas Morrison was a Scottish immigrant who arrived in New Zealand between 1863-1864. He joined the Waikato Regiment soon after, taking up arms and fighting in the Waikato and Tauranga land wars against Māori. Mr Morrison was granted land in the area of Te Papa parish and Greerton and acquired the Victoria Private Hotel on Harrington where he took on the role of hotelkeeper and licensed publican along with his Scottish wife, Henrietta Fisher.
Mr Morrison was refused the renewal of his license to run Victoria Hotel and so left Tauranga with his family to Ohinemutu, Rotorua where he took over the Ohinemutu Hotel for the remainder of his days. He became a well known figure in the Rotorua community with guests coming from near and far to stay in their accommodation and witness the geothermal wonders of Rotorua. Mr Morrison's death came as a shock to the community, he was brought back to Tauranga and given a Masonic funeral by his comrades in the earlier battles and interred at the Missionary Cemetery in Tauranga. He left behind his wife Henrietta who continued to run their hotel, as well as their son and two daughters.SourcesAuckland Council Libraries: Morrison, James ThomasArchway Styles - Collections searchPapers Past B.o.P 23 November 1872
