SummaryA hybrid historic residence located on Courtney Road, Gate Pā, Tauranga. It comprises two merged timber buildings: a single-storey, gabled four-roomed house constructed circa 1920 by Mr Purdie, and a taller two-storey section relocated from Eighth Avenue around 1960 by Ronald Rush. The two were joined to form a single dwelling.
The taller section is historically significant as part of the original vicarage occupied by Canon Charles Jordan, Holy Trinity’s first vicar (appointed 1883), who lived and died there in 1912. This section features solid kauri construction and detailing consistent with military-standard government housing erected after the colonial invasion and raupatu.
The house retains native timber elements, particularly kauri framing and interior finishes. Restoration efforts by Roger Peters in the 1990s used authentic materials: kauri timber salvaged from the 1860s Masonic Hotel, original-period fretwork sourced from Auckland, and an antique staircase adapted from the same hotel. Additional features include imitation stained-glass panels and antique fittings in harmony with the building's Victorian character.SourcesVicar's ghost haunts Gate Pa home, by Chris Kenny » Bay News, October 2, 1996
