SummaryBorn 20 May 1808, Hampshire, England. Joined The Black Watch as ensign in 1825; promoted lieutenant colonel in 1843, colonel in 1854, and major general in 1859. Served with distinction in the Crimean War. Appointed Commander of British forces in New Zealand (1861–1865), leading campaigns in Taranaki, Waikato, and Tauranga during the New Zealand Wars. In 1863 was colonel of the 42nd Regiment and led the assault at the Battle of Pukehinahina (Gate Pā). Promoted lieutenant general in 1868 and general in 1874. Became openly critical of colonial policy, believing the war was being used to facilitate large-scale confiscation of Māori land rather than achieve legitimate military objectives. This disillusionment led to his resignation in 1865. Died 8 June 1888, Kent; buried at Brompton Cemetery, London.
