A two-storey private/temperance hotel established in 1882 by James Bodell, a reformed alcoholic, later Mayor of Tauranga (1888–89) on the SE corner of Wharf St & Cameron Rd. It served travellers to the “Hot Lakes” via the Ōropi coach route and formed part of Bodell’s small commercial cluster (auction mart, bakehouse, etc.). Through the early 1900s it was increasingly called the Domain Hotel. After Bodell’s death it passed to P. J. H. Munro (the Munro family owned it until 1932/33; Munro lived there until 1902); from c.1902 Dr. Fooks used it as home & surgery; c.1905–09 R. W. Meers (photographer) operated there (as “Bellevue House”); later associations include Mrs Milner, Fred Gordon-Meadows, and [T.H.D.?] Walker. The hotel closed in 1969 and was subsequently demolished.SourcesTe Ara – James BodellTauranga Historical Society – Bodell’s BellevueReminiscences of James Bodell (1831-1890)Tauranga Photographers: Robert Walter MeersBOP Times 1969, March 28: Old hotel reaches "end of the road" (includes photo)Bellevue House (photogrqaphic print)
