SummaryDorothy (Danny) Jackson and Jessie (Jess) Watson met as trainee nurses at Auckland Hospital in September 1926. After further training at Campbell Johnstone hospital in Hamilton and then Mid-wifery at St Helens, the nursing Sisters came to Tauranga and started Thornecliffe Private Hospital at 19 Edgecumbe Road, on 14 November 1933.
The original building was an old house, belonging to the Reid family. In 1956 the Sisters bought the adjoining grand house, built in 1931, from Mr Hay, a retired Te Puna farmer.
Thornecliffe changed hands in the early 60s, when it was bought by Sister E Prebble. Then Auckland's Chase Corporation purchased the property in 1971 and annexed the two buildings by way of a long corridor. Two further sales ensued before Thornecliffe became "Cambrae" and was purchased by new owners.
In 1994, owner/operators Thomas and Claire Scott began operating Cambrae Private Hospital - an enterprise dedicated to the care of the aged and terminally ill.SourcesTauranga 1882-1982 - Centennial of Gazetting Tauranga as a Borough, p154-155Photo News December 1964, p 39"Building has kept original caring role...", Bay of Plenty Times dated 28 May 1998, p 15Newspaper article c. 1960's from unknown source: "Appreciation: Huge Crowd Honours Retiring Nursing Sisters".Newspaper articile c. 1960s from unknown source: "With only hope and a plan, young nurses not deterred." by Staff reporter.
