SummaryA builder, born in Limerick, Ireland. He emigrated to New Zealand as a young man and moved from Thames to Tauranga about 1873 to erect the Government Buildings. He contracted for other works in the district, including the courthouse (1874) with Mr Kayes, the Wesleyan Church (1882), and undertook alterations to the Rotorua Sanatorium in 1885. He was a member of the Ancient Order of Foresters. Resided last on the east side of Cameron Road near the 2nd Ave end, between Second and Third. He died at his residence, 10 October 1886, aged 40, and was buried in the new cemetery, leaving a widow.
"The funeral of the late Mr J. J. Bennett took place yesterday afternoon at 2 p.m. There was a large attendance of the friends and acquaintances of the deceased, including 22 members of the local lodge of Foresters, of which Mr Bennett was a member. The cortege halted for a few moments at the Catholic Chapel and then proceeded to the new Cemetery, where the body was interred." Bay of Plenty Times, 1886, 14 October, page 2
