SummarySamuel Clarke was born in Kerikeri in 1824, the second son of Martha Elizabeth Blomfield and George Clarke, former Imperial Government Protector of the Aborigines under Governor Hobson.
He settled at Tauranga in 1860, first as a lessee of the Church Mission property at Te Papa. Afterwards, on his own property on the corner of Spring and Durham Streets.
He married Mary Lee Christopher in 1857, they had seven children.
He left Tauranga during the wars in 1864.
On his return, he settled at 'Topcroft' named after his family's home in Norfolk, and later 'Okoroa' on 500 acres at Bethlehem. He took on roles as Magistrate, Chairman of the County Council, board member of the Road Board and Chairman of the Tauranga School Committee.
