Armstrong, Lady Clarice Amy (née Hodkinson/Hodgkinson) was the wife of Sir Nesbitt William Armstrong, 4th Baronet of Gallen Priory. They arrived in Tauranga on 20 Jun 1911 aboard the Aupouri (with an infant) and settled at Mount Maunganui. Their first home stood on a Yaker family section near Pilot Bay. In 1916 the family moved to Napier but by 1937 they were back in Tauranga (Grace Avenue). She retained vivid memories of early life at the Mount: groceries from Salisbury Wharf, Sunday visits to Johnny Faulkner’s shop, camping families, and excursions by horse and gig. She lived in good health into later life, frequently returning to Mount Maunganui at Christmas. Sir Nesbitt died at Rotorua in 1953. Afterwards Lady Armstrong and her son Sir Andrew lived in Dublin before relocating to Bulawayo, Rhodesia, which she was still calling “home” during a visit to Mount Maunganui c.1960–61.SourcesBay of Plenty Times article c. 1961 "Many changes in Tauranga in the past fifty years"Bay of Plenty Times, 1966, February 12 (text here)Shipping recordsShipping recordsShipping records
