Origin: a project of the Mount 5,000 Club. Created 10 years after the Tauranga Soundshell to provide an outdoor entertainment venue for Mount Maunganui.
Construction of the Soundshell (facing Hopukiore) and terraced seating (facing the ocean) was completed in 1964.
End: 1998 report identified the structure as an earthquake risk. In 1999 Tauranga District Council voted to remove the Soundshell and fences to 'open up the area for better use by the community'.
