Gray, William John, 1849-1930 (Person)

SummaryBelfast-born William Gray married Margaret Johnston Vance in 1872 and had six children.

They arrived in Auckland in 1875 aboard the 'Alumbagh' and settled in Katikati a few years later.
William worked as a builder and bridge contractor, and built several of the municipal buildings in Katikati, including the Courthouse, Police Station, Orange Hall and Anglican Church.

He was elected as a county councillor in 1897, serving for some years. He also worked as Tauranga County Overseer and Tauranga County Engineer.
He was buried at the Katikati Cemetery.
