Samuel worked for Mr C. F Washer as a blacksmith and taught the trade to Charlie Haua.
He set up his horse and buggy smithy business on the corner of Spring and Grey Streets in 1925. The Post Office moved there after he moved his business up to the corner of Spring and Durham Streets. Now concentrating on automotives and selling fuel, and becoming franchisee for International Harvester.
He also travelled around the Bay of Plenty working as a marine welder, having the first gas and electric welding equipment in the area. He worked on the first sheet-work at Mount Maunganui wharf.
His sons joined the business after World War II. They sold the site to the New Zealand Post Office in August 1974.
