Collection SummaryA selection of photographs of local interest acquired from the Fairfax Archives being sold from the United States. DescriptionIn an article and comment in the New Zealand Herald dated Wednesday 15 April 2015, pages A23 and A29, journalist Brian Rudman explains how the collection of historic pictures came to be in the United States and in danger of going to landfill.
A later item on the Radio New Zealand Website, published 9 January 2024, recounts how part of the collection made it back to the National Library. National Library saves Fairfax archive from US landfill
The rest of the archive is being offered for sale by the Duncan Miller Gallery in Los Angeles. Te Ao Mārama - Tauranga City Libraries have acquired nineteen images of local interest and significance for our archives, and to provide access via Pae Korokī.
We have discussed with the inheritor of the Fairfax copyrights, Stuff Limited, how to manage access to and reuse of the copyrighted images. Each image will have an appropriate statement of the copyright.
For example one of the images, Photo 25-1942, is still in copyright, and access and reuse is subject to limitations. The copyright of several others is uncertain; we will say who we think the owner is (if it still applies).
