SummaryDonald was raised on a farm south of Kawhia. He was inspired to work at sea by the book "Two Years Before The Mast"
He worked in a garage and the Post Office before going to sea in 1922 at age 17, working aboared the scow Zingara.
He worked aboad vessels in the South Pacific, Australia and South America.

After WWII, he worked as a game fish charter boat skipper in Tauranga with launch owner, George Meredith.
He skippered a number of vessels of the Holm Shipping Company.
He moved to Tauranga in 1961 and set up his own ship and cargo surveying business, retiring in 1973.
Captain Donald Robert Munro presented his collection of nautical books to the Tauranga District Libraries. These have become known as the "Munro Collection'.

His community associations include:

Life member of the New Zealand Company of Master Mariners.
60+ years membership of the Masonic Lodge.
Member of the Presbyterian Church.
President of Cape Horners in New Zealand.
A member of the International Association of Cape Horners.

He died in Tauranga in August 1995.
