SummaryNamed for property owner and investor Peter Munro (d. 1940), Munro’s Building stands at the corner of The Strand and Wharf Street. It was constructed in two stages following the 1916 Strand fire, which destroyed earlier timber shops on the site, including Munro's own store. The ground floor was built in 1917–18 to a design by H. H. Clemson, using reinforced concrete foundations intended to support additional storeys. A second storey was added in 1935–36, designed by H. L. D. West, and this later addition largely defines the building’s present appearance. Executed in the Moderne style, it is characterised by strong horizontal emphasis, a rounded corner, a textured plaster finish, and restrained decorative detailing. The building forms part of the group of inter-war commercial buildings on The Strand.SourcesCentral Tauranga Heritage Study : part two, April 2008 (page 8)
