SummaryConstructed in 1935, between the World Wars, the building dates from a period when earlier timber structures were being replaced by masonry and Devonport Road was shifting from a mixed residential–commercial street to a predominantly commercial one. Its restrained combination of stripped Classical and Art Deco design was typical of the period, particularly for retail buildings.
The building has a two-storey frontage of plastered masonry, with shops at street level and, originally, living accommodation above. The façade is organised into three vertical sections, with the central section projecting slightly forward to create a clear focal point. This middle bay contains one main window flanked by two narrower vertical windows, while large multi-pane shopfront windows emphasise natural light and display space. Decoration is deliberately minimal, limited to shallow relief detailing and simple raised lettering. A small flagpole mounted on a circular base adds a modest sense of civic presence and commercial confidence.SourcesCentral Tauranga Heritage Study : part two, April 2008 (pages 53-54)
