SummaryConstructed in 1933 in stripped classical style typical of the period, it is a two-storey commercial building. Its front is balanced and orderly, divided into nine vertical sections. The original timber windows were arranged in pairs, each with small upper panes, although one window has since been altered. The top of the building has a gently curved edge with raised plaster lettering, and a suspended verandah runs along the footpath below.
The building was put up by local builder Karl Johanson, who also built the nearby Royal Arcade and other town-centre buildings. He bought the site in 1931 and developed it next to the Royal Arcade. The property remained in Johanson family ownership until at least the 1950s.
At the time it was built, Devonport Road was changing from a street with houses and small workshops into a mainly commercial area. The Northern Star Building sits among other 1920s and 1930s masonry buildings on the east side of the road that were constructed during this period.Main Body
