SummaryOliver William Wright, born Auckland 17 September 1842, son of Thomas Westmorland Wright, contract carpenter, and Harriet Wright. Educated in early Auckland; apprenticed to sail-making firm, later abandoning apprenticeship as a teen and travelling south. Cared for by local Māori near modern day Drury. Fluent in te reo Māori he maintained close relationships with the communities, declining military involvement during the New Zealand Wars. Worked variously as sawmill foreman (Mercury Bay), sailor, and labourer. Settled as farmer at Whanganui; married Annabella Wood Lind in 1870. Moved to Tauranga in 1879; farmed and held land at Gate Pā, Greerton, Ōropi, and Te Puna. Served on Greerton School Committee; regarded as a community stalwart. Widowed in 1894.
