SummaryEldest surviving son of Asher and Hannah Asher, educated at the Synagogue School in Auckland and employed for L. A. Nathan there before migrating to Tauranga to manage its branch there from about 1870. By 1872 he owned a clothier and outfitter on The Strand. He operated in coastal shipping, owning the schooners Wave (1876–1880) and Tokerau (from 1880), the latter wrecked at Mercury Bay in 1883 with cargo lost. He was active in Tauranga racing as steward (1873), club secretary (1877), and later clerk of the course. Fluent in te reo Māori and known as Rewiri, he was a licensed interpreter, Freemason, and licensee of the Tauranga Hotel in 1909. Married to Katerina, he had 13 children, lived at Whakarepai, and was buried with her at Ngāpeke.
