Appointed assistant officer in charge at the Blenheim Telegraph Office in 1888; held a similar position at Christchurch for four years. Transferred to Tauranga in 1895. Postmaster at Tauranga 1896–1899, remaining in the district until at least mid-1902. While in Tauranga also served as agent for the Public Trustee, officer in charge of the Lands for Settlement Office, and Officer in Charge of Ports and Coastwaiters (Tauranga). Member of the Tauranga Club; interested in athletics; keen floriculturist. Married Olivia Emma Pellow Payne (1892, Wellington). Later transferred back to Blenheim.
