SummaryThe Bay of Plenty Times is a regional daily newspaper based in Tauranga, first published on 4 September 1872. Founded by H.W. Penny and W.B. Langbridge, it is one of New Zealand’s longest-running provincial newspapers. Initially issued twice weekly and printed from premises on Beach Road (now The Strand), it became known locally as the “Tauranga Duster.” Ownership passed through several hands in its early decades, including Edward Mortimer Edgecumbe and George Vesey Stewart, before stabilising under the Gifford and Cross families from 1913, a period that lasted for most of the twentieth century and oversaw major growth in circulation, technology, and regional coverage.

The newspaper survived repeated fires, economic instability, and major technological change, transitioning from hand-set type to linotype, rotary presses, and later full computerisation. Sold to Wilson and Horton in 1992, it became part of APN News & Media and, from 2014, New Zealand Media and Entertainment (NZME). Today the Bay of Plenty Times continues as a daily regional newspaper with print and digital editions, covering more than 150 years of life in the Western Bay of Plenty.
