Bateman, Henry, 1878-1953, (Person)
SummaryActive Tauranga 1910–c.1926. Draper, insurance agent, and volunteer sports administrator. Henry Bateman purchased the long-established drapery business of T. Stuart in November 1910, after several years’ association with the D.S.C. establishment in Auckland. He traded as a draper on The Strand and in 1911 joined other local merchants in petitioning the Borough Council to have the street watered to reduce dust damage to stock.
By 1913 Bateman was local agent for the Royal Insurance Company and in the same year served on the committee of the Tauranga Athletic Club. In 1914 he acted as a steward of the Bay of Plenty Jockey Club. In 1920 he was elected an officer of the football club formed by the 38th Company Senior Cadets and later that year donated a bell for the opening of the Motiti Island church, congratulating the community on providing a place of worship.
In 1921 Bateman presented a commemorative pennant at the first Auckland–Tauranga ocean yacht race. He was elected an officer of the Tauranga Rugby Union in 1922 and in 1923 served as an official of the Tauranga Regatta Club for the third annual ocean race. That year he also carried out improvements to his property at the corner of Strand and Hamilton Streets and transferred his drapery business to the altered premises. His wife, Amelia Mary Bateman, died in January 1923; they had two daughters and one son. The drapery business is noted as closing about 1926.SourcesBay of Plenty Times, 26 Jan 1923, p.2 – death of wife, Amelia Mary BatemanBay of Plenty Times, 21 Nov 1910, p.2 – purchase of T.
