Married Elizabeth Durley on 3 July 1860 and emigrated to New Zealand in 1864 on the Statesman with two children. A former gold-seeker in Australia and traveller to Canada, he established butchery businesses in Tauranga, Rotorua, and Auckland, notably Harvey & Kirk and later Harvey & Sons. He was present in Rotorua during the Tarawera eruption, June 1886. He had ten children; six survived him. His widow survived until 1925.
