SummaryRawiri Puhirake was an influential fighting chief and a prominent leader during the conflicts of Pukehinahina and Te Ranga. He was proficient in both reading and writing in his native tongue was recognised as a devout follower of the Christian faith. He fell at the battle of Te Ranga, buried in the trenches with his fellow tribesmen. His remains were later exhumed and re-interred at Mission cemetery, Te Papa, on the grounds traditionally known to his iwi as Otamataha pā.
