SummaryAlso known as the First World War or the Great War.

Global war fought across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, the Pacific and at sea. New Zealand entered as part of the British Empire; preparations began after 5 August 1914, with early service in Samoa, then Gallipoli, the Western Front and the Sinai–Palestine campaign.

For Tauranga the war was not distant. It drew men from the district into the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. The 6th Hauraki Company of the Auckland Infantry Battalion was recruited from the No. 2 Area Group, including Tauranga, Katikati, Waihi, Rotorua, Whakatāne, Ōpōtiki, Thames, Paeroa, Coromandel and Morrinsville.

Local impact came through enlistment, farewells, casualty news, military ballots, labour disruption, returned servicemen, family bereavement and memorialisation. Nationally, almost 100,000 New Zealanders served overseas; around 18,000 died in or because of the war, and 41,000 were wounded or became ill. Conscription from 1916 intensified the war’s reach into households and workplaces.Date of Event1914-1919
