SummaryBorn at Clones, County Monaghan, Ireland, and married Sarah Leach in Canada in 1852. After emigrating to New Zealand aboard the Mermaid in 1863–64, he farmed at Waihi Bush (now Woodbury), became first licensee of the Sawyers Arms Hotel there, and later leased a boarding house in St Asaph Street, Christchurch. After moving to Te Puke in 1879, he owned land at Te Puke, where the family home was named Te Kohanga, and operated the Union Boarding House on the corner of McLean and Anson streets, Tauranga..
