SummaryBorn at Tauranga on 27 June 1891, daughter of Henry James and Catherina “Kate” Vickery. Trained as a teacher and taught at Tauranga, Auckland and Waihī. Married Alfred William Augustus “King” Hyde at Waihī on 5 October 1912. They had nine children and later lived at Te Aroha, Wellington, Mount Isa and Sydney. After King was ordered to leave mine work because of lead poisoning, the couple bought a 17-man boarding house at Mount Isa. They expanded into adjoining premises, eventually accommodating about 40 men and preparing meals for more than 80 around the mine’s three shifts. Kate also undertook laundry work using an outdoor copper filled and emptied by hand. A hockey player and participant in women’s rowing regattas, she returned to Tauranga at about 74, revisiting the site of her Second Avenue childhood home and staying with her childhood friend Elva Brain. Died at Sydney on 1 May 1982.
