SummaryCaptain Archibald Campbell Turner was a New Zealand engineer, surveyor and military officer, born in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, and the third son of Colonel Charles Barker Turner. He emigrated to New Zealand with his family in 1862 and served in the Colonial Defence Force and 1st Waikato Militia during the New Zealand Wars, including at Te Ranga and in the Tauranga Bush Campaign. He was profiled among colonial military figures in Heroes of New Zealand and Maori History of the War (1887). Turner succeeded Captain Skeet as District Surveyor in 1868 and surveyed Tauranga township and confiscated land around Waimapū. As resident engineer, district surveyor and Tauranga County Engineer, he supervised roads and bridges throughout the Bay of Plenty. He later held government engineering appointments elsewhere in the North Island before returning as Tauranga County Engineer in 1907. Turner died at Pāpāmoa on 30 December 1912 and was buried in Ōtamataha Pā Mission Cemetery.
