Established in Tauranga Prior to 1915

This list has been compiled in consultation with Mesdames U. Sandoe and G. Mackenzie; Messrs A. Baker and G. A. Denston; City Archivist Mr J. Rorke, who were involved in preparing a list from early rate records for inclusion in the city centennial book, “Tauranga 1882–1982.” The book list is here amended, names being omitted where no local descendants could in fact be found, and some added where some have since been located. Also some names have been included of early families who qualify but were not on ratepayers’ lists.

All descendants here listed are positively identified. One person per family (as far as possible the senior member) is recorded except for some very early families, notably that of John Lees Faulkner 1840, where families to the second and third generation were established here prior to 1915. In such cases one name has been included for each of these family branches.

It may appear that the net has been cast rather wide when descendants living within the county, but not the actual city, have been given, but in consultation it is felt that the links are so close that this is advisable.

Undoubtedly there will remain some omissions.
