Visited Taranaki in 1860 and served briefly as a volunteer; farmed until entering the New Zealand Civil Service (1867) as clerk/interpreter at Raglan; Resident Magistrate at Ōpōtiki from 1871; Captain, New Zealand Militia, 1871; Coroner from 1874; Resident Magistrate at Tauranga, 1876–1888; Inspector of Native Schools in Tauranga/Bay of Plenty and Lake districts; in charge of Native Affairs in the Bay of Plenty and Rotorua, 1876–1888; Commissioner under the Tauranga District Lands Act, 1876–1886, completing subdivision of confiscated lands; first chairman of the Rotorua Town Board; Resident Magistrate at Maketū (1877–1888); appointed Judge of the Native Land Court (1886); Resident Magistrate at Wanganui (1889-); examiner of candidates for licences as Native Interpreters (1889-); Resident Magistrate at Wellington (1892–1893); Stipendiary Magistrate for Wanganui, Hawera, Marton and other courts (1893-); helped prepare rules and formulary under the Magistrates Court Act 1893; appointed Judge of the Native Appellate Court (1895); Senior Magistrate at Auckland (1897–1904); Stipendiary Magistrate, Registrar of the Supreme Court and Sheriff at Napier (1904); retired on pension in 1908. Continued as Coroner until shortly before his death; died at Napier on 25 May 1919, aged 81, and was buried in Napier Cemetery.
